Myopia – Short sighted

Short-sightedness, or myopia, is the most common reason why people come to Medownick seeking laser eye surgery to get rid of their glasses and contacts.
Laser eye surgery is an excellent treatment for short-sightedness, and many patients achieve beyond 20/20 vision without just hours.
If you are myopic or short-sighted, you’ll likely have no trouble seeing things up close, like reading your ‘phone or a book, but objects at a distance - such as road-signs, a friend waving across the room, or players on the football field - are blurry at best without glasses or contacts.
Myopia
Causes
Myopia is an inherited condition, and is usually caused when the eyeball is slightly more oval-shaped than round, from front to back. Long periods in front of close-up objects (like screens) can also worsen or sometimes even cause myopia.
This oval shape means that light entering the front of the eye needs to travel further to get to the back of the eye. As a result, the lens is unable to focus light from distant objects clearly onto the retina, so those distant objects appear blurry.
Testing
When you come to Medownick Laser Clinic for your free assessment, we perform a thorough series of tests designed to understand not only your accurate prescription, but also the general health and suitability of your eyes for laser.
We use advanced equipment and technologies that are designed to be utilised prior to surgery, so you gain extremely accurate results. Based on these results, we are able to advise the very best course of action to have you seeing naturally.
Treatment
For suitable short-sighted patients, we use state-of-the-art laser technology to gently flatten the central apex of the cornea (the clear window at the front of the eye). This reduces the distance that light has to travel, bringing distant objects into clarity.
Myopia can be corrected with SmartSight, Touchless Robotic and LASIK laser procedures, depending on your prescription and your personal preferences. All of these are fast, virtually pain-free, and can take human sight beyond 20/20.
