Laser Eye Surgery

Everything you’ve been wanting to know about laser eye surgery

Laser eye surgery is a fast, safe and long-term alternative to wearing glasses or contact lenses. It is most commonly used to help people with short-sightedness, long-sightedness or blurred vision to see completely naturally.

Why should you have laser eye surgery?

Thinking about laser?

Here are six reasons why our patients tell us they’re so glad they switched glasses and contacts for natural vision.

A world of convenience

No more fogging up under PPE, feeling blind at the gym, waking up to blur, or packing spare lenses everywhere you go. A world of convenience can open up to you (and you can walk in the rain whenever you like).

Take that new job

Are glasses holding you back from taking the next step? Apply for that new role! Snuggle that new baby! Move to that new country! Renovate that new home! And do it all without the hassle of glasses or contacts.

Adventures and thrills

Experience the thrill of diving into pristine waters, hiking through rainforests, skiing down a fresh slope, kicking a footy, and taking to the open road… all without the bother of contacts or glasses.

See and be seen

See and be seen naturally. Shave, pluck and apply make-up without fogged-up glasses sliding down your nose. Spot your date across the room (and your fiancé at the end of the aisle) without a lens between you.

Keep your cash

Did you know you could save money with laser? Save on decades of new glasses, prescription sunnies and contact lenses. Our payment plans are interest-free, and can be spaced out for months or years to suit your budget.

A safe alternative to contacts

Here's a scary stat: contact-lens wearers have a 1 in 100 risk of developing serious eye infection, and a 1 in 2000 chance of significant vision loss. Laser may be a safer, longer-term alternative that cares for your eyes.

Can laser give me 20/20 vision?

Eyes

Yes! Laser is most commonly used to fix long-sightedness (hypermetropia), short-sightedness (myopia) and astigmatism.

Most of our patients achieve close to or even better than 20/20 vision.

Medownick Laser Clinic specialises in using laser technology to perform surgeries that correct what is known as “refractive errors” in the eyes (listed below). Refractive errors relate to the shape of the eye, which bends and refracts light in such a way that objects might seem blurry or out-of-focus at certain distances.

Once these errors are corrected by the laser, patients have little or no need for glasses or contact lenses.

What if I only started needing reading glasses in my 40s?

You are not alone. In fact, almost everyone in the world, regardless of whether or not they needed glasses when they were younger, and regardless of whether or not they had laser eye surgery, is likely to need reading glasses as they age.

This is due to a condition called presbyopia. Despite behaving in a similar way to long-sightedness, by making it difficult for you to see details up close, presbyopia is not caused by the shape of your eye.

While laser can and sometimes is used to treat presbyopia, in most cases we will recommend a different, non-laser procedure, known as lens replacement, because it offers a longer-term solution that will turn back the clock on your eyes.

SAFETY

With a 99% success rate, laser eye surgery
is one of the safest elective procedures.

Laser eye surgery treatments are extremely safe. More than 30 million laser eye surgery treatments have been performed worldwide, with more than 97 percent of patients achieving 20/20 vision or even better, and not a single case of blindness reported in Australia.

Like any surgical procedure, laser surgery is subject to complications, but the good news is that serious or long-term complications are extremely rare. Moreover, most complications can be corrected through eye-drops or an enhancement procedure, which we provide free-of-charge if it is needed in the first five years following your initial procedure.

The reality is that you have a greater chance of developing an infection from your contact-lenses, or having a car accident on the way to work, than you are at developing a serious complication from laser eye surgery.
